AFG GRANT INFORMATION

Every year, the Department of Homeland Security appropriates grant funding through the USFA (United States Fire Administration) to eligible fire departments, ems organizations and regions for the purpose of enhancing their ability to protect the health and safety of the public and firefighting personnel as it relates to all fire and fire related hazards.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants appropriation for 2006 was estimated at $655 Million and was divided as follows:

GRANT	APPROPRIATION
AFG (Assistance to Firefighters Grant)	$499 Mil
EMS (through the AFG)	$19 Mil
FP&S (Fire Prevention & Safety)	$27 Mil
SAFER	$110 Mil


The Required Matching criteria for the AFG/EMS and FP&S grants:
Population under 20000	5%
Population 20-50000	10%
Population 50000 +	20%


The Maximum Federal Share is broken down as follows:
Population under 500000	Fed.Share = 1 Mil
Population 500-1 Mil	Fed.Share = 1.75 Mil
Population 1 Mil +	Fed.Share = 2.75 Mil

The AFG, EMS and FP&S grants are broken into two main program areas of funding availability:

1. Operations and Safety and
2. Vehicle Acquisitions
